Divination by mirror and candle is the thread running through this postcard, which shows a young woman peering into a hand mirror by candlelight, a traditional Halloween scene of the kind meant to reveal a future spouse. Such fortune-telling customs were widely associated with October 31 in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when Halloween cards often leaned on romance and folklore rather than the ghosts and jack-o'-lanterns that later became standard. Postcards like this were mass-produced and mailed as cheap, quick greetings, so they offer a useful window into the popular imagery and superstitions of their day. Notice how the candle and dark setting create the mood that made these games feel mysterious and playful.
