Dated 1892, this picture comes from a time when Halloween in America was mostly a night for parlor games, fortune-telling, and neighborhood pranks, not the costumed trick-or-treating that developed later. Families marked the evening with apple bobbing, nut-cracking, and divining the future from mirrors or melted wax, customs that drew on harvest traditions and on Scottish and Irish practices carried over by immigrants. Looking at the scene with that in mind helps explain its mix of playfulness and superstition.
