Berryman's cartoon sets the holiday's older customs against its newer habits, as the title "Halloween -- Ancient and Modern" suggests. The drawing was made for the *Washington Star*, where Clifford Kennedy Berryman worked as a staff cartoonist for decades and was known for commenting on the capital's politics and daily life. By the early 1900s, Halloween in American cities was shifting from folk rites tied to harvest and the supernatural toward costumed parties and street mischief, and cartoons like this one often used that change to poke fun at contemporary manners. Its value lies in showing how newspapers of the period looked at ordinary holidays as well as public affairs.
