A Halloween skating party held on the Mall in Central Park is the detail that sets this poster apart from other holiday images on the board. The silkscreen announces that skaters should bring their skates and come in costume, with prizes promised for the best outfits. It was produced around 1936 under the Federal Art Project, the New York arm of the Works Progress Administration, a New Deal program that employed artists during the Depression and turned out posters to advertise public events and services. Posters like this one show how city recreation was promoted to working families in those years, when free or cheap entertainment in parks mattered a great deal.
