A snowball hurled at a jack-o'-lantern is the joke here, a pairing that only makes sense in a cold-weather state where an early October storm can arrive before the holiday. The drawing is signed "Bart" and was probably published in *The Minneapolis Journal*, where it likely ran as one of a series of small cartoons accompanying the daily weather forecast. Between the late 1890s and 1915, newspapers across the country used such pictures to mix forecasts with local humor, and Halloween was a favorite subject because its pranks and carved pumpkins made easy comic material.
