Halloween in the early twentieth century was far less commercialized than it is today, and this c. 1917 print belongs to a time when costumed revelry, parlor games and neighborhood pranks were the main ways communities marked the night. The record gives only the title, so the picture's exact scene is open to viewing rather than fixed by a caption. Photographs from this period often show children and young adults in homemade disguises, with the holiday still rooted in older harvest and autumn customs that had carried over from Scotland and Ireland. Prints like this one from the Library of Congress's collections are useful for seeing how the holiday looked before mass-produced decorations and candy took over.
